Queen Elizabeth to visit York

Queen Elizabeth is to visit York this April

Her Majesty The Queen is to visit the city of York on 5th April 2012 to distribute the Royal Maundy at the Minster. The last time the Queen distributed Maundy Money in York was in 1972 and it is a double celebration as the visit co-incides with the 800th anniversary of the city’s charter.

The monarch is expected to enter the city at Micklegate Bar, the traditional Royal entrance to the city, where she will be greeted by the Lord Mayor and York’s town clerk before going to the Minster for the service.

“The Queen has asked that representatives from all over the United Kingdom should be included in the Royal Maundy this year, alongside the recipients from the Diocese of York, and there will be a special air of thanksgiving for her long reign,” said The Dean of York, the Very Reverend Keith Jones. “There is so much excitement centered on London this year, that it’s great that York will once again be the place for this Royal and beautiful ceremony.”

Tourism leaders in York announced that they were launching a marketing drive to attract more visitors to mark the landmark anniversary and boost the city’s multi-million pound industry. The last time the Queen visited the city of York was back in 2005 for Royal Ascot.

Stay at Royal Goldsborough Hall

Goldsborough Hall makes an ideal place to stay if visiting York this April to see the Queen. See our accommodation page for rooms and availability.

Goldsborough has fascinating royal connections as it was the home of HRH Princess Mary, the Queen’s aunt, from 1922-1930 before her move to Harewood House. While at the Hall, King George and Queen Mary visited regularly along with the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of York (later to become George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Visiting Royals planted trees in the Lime Tree Walk and it is highly likely that The Queen visited Goldsborough Hall as a baby when her mother Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother came to the Hall and planted a tree in 1927.
