The Restoration of Goldsborough Hall

During the 1980s the Hall was converted from a private family home into a nursing home that was the flag ship of the Goldsborough Estates Group of nursing homes. This group was subsequently bought by BUPA and the Hall was closed down as a nursing home in 2003.

The Hall before its restoration

As buyers were sought for the Hall, it was left derelict for over two years. Without heating or maintenance, nature took over. The Virginia creeper was almost covering the Hall entirely and coming inside in many places. Squirrels and rats occupied the attic and cellars and the inside of the Hall was also suffering after 20 years as a nursing home. Blocked downpipes were creating leaks causing extensive damage in some areas.

When the Oglesby family bought the hall in 2005, they set about the restoration, clearing the creeper to allow the re-pointing with lime mortar of 15 miles of brickwork, which is still an on-going project.

Six bedroom suites have now been created on the top floor as luxury guest accommodation and b&b, and the hall is now one of Yorkshire’s finest wedding venues.

The Hall has also been working closely with with Ryedale Plasterers on the restoration of a heavily water damaged 1750s Robert Adam ceiling in Princess Mary’s bedroom (pic: Ed Richardson).
