History:
By the late 1600s the Hutton family, who had built Goldsborough Hall, had only daughters. The eldest daughter married Philip Wharton, a relation of Lord Wharton, and they made their home at the Hall. The sister married the elder son of the Byerley family, moving to Middridge Grange in Northumberland. When the Whartons only had a daughter, the daughter married Robert, the younger son of the Byerley family, ensuring the estate remained within the family.
