Royal Gardens of Goldsborough Hall
Roses at the Hall
The 11-acres of gardens at Goldsborough are situated in the grounds of the Grade II* 17th-century stately home. The formal landscaped gardens were laid out by Richard Woods during the 1750s in the style of Capability Brown. More recently the Hall was home to HRH Princess Mary who lived here during the 1920s following her marriage to Viscount Lascelles, son and heir of the 5th Earl of Harewood. From 1922-30 Princess Mary made many changes to both the house and garden.
View along herbaceous borders to the Lime Tree Walk
The Hall was remodelled by the architect Sidney Kitson while in the gardens a vista was created to the south with the planting of the walled terrace and the beech avenue with herbaceous borders centred around Princess Mary’s sundial.
The Lime Tree Walk was also begun with the first tree being planted in 1922 by Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles. the remaining 33 trees were planted by Royalty in the 1920s including King George V and Queen Mary. The gardens were open for the National Garden Scheme by Princess Mary on 4 July 1928 when the takings were £180 13s 6d.
Listed in the top 20 places to stay with great gardens
The Times has listed Goldsborough Hall in the top 20 places to stay with great gardens, detailing the owners’ careful restoration of the gardens and the accommodation “decidedly posh b&b”.
Garden Restoration
Over the past six years, owner Clare Oglesby and head gardener Ray Farrer have restored the gardens of Goldsborough Hall to their former glory. Garden highlights include snowdrops and spring bulbs, a hellebore walk, a giant redwood and of the oldest horsechestnuts left standing in the country.
In the grounds there is also a copse of five Japanese cherry trees, given to Princess Mary as a wedding gift by the Emperor of Japan. the 120ft-long herbaceous borders were replanted in 2006 in a Gertrude-Jeykll style for a riot of colour from June to September. The quarter of a mile Lime Tree Walk, planted by Royalty is host to over 50,000 daffodils in the spring. Among the most famous are those planted by King George V and Queen Mary and The Duke and the Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother).
Garden Openings
The gardens will be open to the public for the National Garden Scheme on 1 April and 22 July 2012 and for garden groups by appointment. We will be also be opening for Snowdrop Days next February.
