Goldsborough Hall - AA 5 Gold Star rated accommodation

The Lascelles Suite

This spectacular room faces both south and east, getting the benefit of all day sun and fantastic views across the open parkland and down the Lime Tree Walk. The room is accessed via an additional flight of steps, which gives it full height windows, as the floor was raised to cover up a trapped Jacobean vaulted ceiling from the room below that was hidden away in the 1750s. Most amazingly the room features curved walls and mullion stone windows to the east, and fully restored Georgian sash windows in the south bay in which a sunken whirlpool bath can be enjoyed, allowing guests to lie in the bath while looking out across the open parkland.

History:
This suite is named after the Lascelles family who purchased the Hall in the 1750s from the Byerley family, as they had no heirs. The Lascelles sons had become extremely wealthy from trading in the West Indies and the younger brother purchased the estates of Plumpton and Goldsborough, while his elder brother set about the construction of Harewood House. Consequently John Carr and Robert Adam, who worked at Harewood, also remodelled the Hall. Both sons died without heirs and the then 24,000-acre Harewood estate passed to cousins. In total the Hall remained under the ownership of the Lascelles family for 200 years. In the 1920s Viscount Lascelles married HRH Princess Mary and made Goldsborough their first family home. During this time the Lascelles suite was used as the day nursery for the children, the eldest of whom, George Lascelles, is the current Earl of Harewood.
