We are delighted to share the news that the gardens at Goldsborough Hall have once again been awarded Gold at Yorkshire in Bloom 2026, making this our 4th consecutive Gold since we first entered the competition in 2022.

And there was even more reason to celebrate this year, as Goldsborough Hall was also named Best in Category for Medium Business Garden, the second time we have received this accolade.

For a garden that was largely overgrown and forgotten when we arrived at Goldsborough Hall in 2005, receiving recognition from Yorkshire in Bloom is always particularly special.

Yorkshire in Bloom celebrates some of the finest gardens, communities and public spaces across the county, with judges looking at three key areas: horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation.

Maintaining the gardens at Goldsborough Hall is rather different from preparing a garden for a single show or judging day. Our 12 acres of grounds form part of the experience of the Hall throughout the year, welcoming guests, wedding couples, diners and garden visitors, as well as opening regularly for the National Garden Scheme.

From the formal gardens surrounding the Hall to the historic Lime Tree Walk, Rose Garden, Kitchen Garden, glasshouse and herbaceous borders, there is always something requiring attention.

That makes four consecutive Gold awards a wonderful reflection of the care, knowledge and sheer hard work that goes into the gardens throughout every season.

A real team achievement

The Goldsborough gardening team: head gardener Debbie with assistant gardeners Paul and Lucie

The gardens are led by our Head Gardener, Dr Debbie Evans, working alongside Paul and Lucie, with invaluable help from our volunteer Alex. Together they care for a garden which continues to evolve while respecting the history and character of this remarkable place.

Debbie says:

‘For Goldsborough Hall to receive gold for the 4th year running is something the whole team can be incredibly proud of. A garden of this size never stands still and there is always another border to tend, plant to nurture or seasonal job waiting to be done. Winning Best Medium Business Garden as well makes all that work feel very worthwhile.’

Goldsborough Hall’s beautiful and award-winning gardens

For us, the award is also recognition of something that has been more than 20 years in the making.

When we came to Goldsborough Hall in 2005, both the house and gardens needed an enormous amount of work. Much of the historic garden had disappeared beneath years of growth and neglect, but traces of its former life remained.

Those traces were particularly important because Goldsborough Hall was once the family home of HRH Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V, and her husband Viscount Lascelles. During their time here in the 1920s, the gardens flourished and Princess Mary herself opened them to visitors for the National Garden Scheme.

Over the past two decades we have gradually brought the gardens back to life, restoring historic features while adding new planting and creating a garden that can continue to develop for future generations.

A garden to be enjoyed

Goldsboough Hall’s gardens are there to be enjoyed

Awards are wonderful, but ultimately a garden is there to be enjoyed.

One of the greatest pleasures for all of us is seeing visitors wandering beneath the trees, discovering a favourite corner, stopping to admire a border or returning at a different time of year to see how the garden has changed.

So, four years after taking the plunge and entering Yorkshire in Bloom for the first time, we are enormously proud to have achieved four Gold awards in four years, together with our second Best Medium Business Garden title.

Congratulations to Debbie, Paul, Lucie and Alex, and to everyone else (including the maintenance team) who help keep Goldsborough Hall looking its best throughout the year.

We’d like to hope that HRH Princess Mary might have been rather pleased too.
